My brother, Steve, was a big man in so many ways. He was large physically, but even bigger in spirit. He loved to joke, laugh, and make others laugh. He loved gatherings of friends and family, creating good food and sharing it with others…..This hospitalization was for a routine outpatient hernia repair. Just two days earlier, he had undergone his annual colonoscopy. The hernia had worsened since his last hospitalization, and it was time to take care of it. He thought he could knock out both procedures in the same week to minimize time off work. When Steve woke up from surgery, he immediately complained of intense pain.
