Angela, one of our newer fabulous nurses, had admitted a “pogy” (that’s our units slang for “Para 0 Gravida 1”; or p0g1, thus, ‘pogy’) with ruptured membranes earlier in the shift. The patient, Michelle, had wanted very badly to “go natural”, which for us means to have an unmedicated birth: no meds for pain, no meds to accelerate labor. The patient had been doing very well earlier in the shift with managing her pain. She had been ambulating, both as a means of pain control and a means of naturally allowing labor to proceed. Sadly, she had made no cervical change for a few hours, and was fast approaching the need for augmenting her labor….
