2025 Strategic Plan

STRATEGIC GOAL 1

Promote congruent academic, practice, regulation, and accreditation expectations for new graduate nurse outcomes.

Initiative 1.1: Define and set standards for the profession on practice readiness, clinical reasoning and judgment, and competencies.

Initiative 1.1 Task Group
  1. Task Group Charge: To evaluate the literature, theoretical and philosophical perspectives related to practice readiness, clinical reasoning, and competencies and create a publication for dissemination.
  2. Members: Christine Tanner, Patricia Benner, Carol Durham, Pat Kyriakidis, Kathie Lasater, Kristina Dreifuerst, Phil Dickison, Patrick Lavoie, James Brown, Alexandra Duke, Edward Burns, Donna Wright. Co-Chairs Garrett Chan and Mary Ann Jessee

STRATEGIC GOAL 1

Initiative 1.2: Articulate the ideal relationships among the profession’s current competency standards and ICONEd’s standards for clinical reasoning and judgment, competencies, and practice readiness).

Initiative 1.2 Task Group

Standards Group

 Task Group Charge:

This task group will use the work of the Framework Task Group to explore the relationship among the AACN Level 1 Essentials for Nursing Education, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (and others as deemed appropriate), and ICONEd’s practice readiness framework.

Preparation for this work can begin before the Framework Task Group work is complete by:

1. Ensuring full task group understanding of the profession’s standards that will be included in this work.

2. Articulating the relationship among the profession’s existing standards.

Framework Group

Task Group Charge:

This Task Group will use 1) the Expert Panel’s conceptual definitions and 2) the work of the Faculty Development and Resources Task Force to:

  1. Create a framework articulating the relationships among:
  2. The concepts of clinical reasoning and judgment, competencies, and practice readiness as described by the Expert Panel.
  3. The work role competencies and enabling skills as described by Benner et al.

Describe the responsibilities of each interested party in promoting learner’s development of clinical reasoning and judgment, competency achievement, and practice readiness.

STRATEGIC GOAL 2

Serve as a center for learning andragogies that promote learner capacity to increase the health and wellness of nursing’s recipients of care.

Initiative 2.1: Elevate the reason for clinical education is to ensure nurses are equipped to improve health and wellbeing of recipients of care; markers of good nursing practice are reflected in outcomes.

Initiative 2.2: Establish standards for clinical education andragogies and structure to support learner outcomes.

Initiative 2.1, 2.2 Task Group

Clinical Education Group

Task Group Charge:

Background: There is a scarcity of clinical education sites and a tendency for clinical experiences to focus on tasks and procedures rather than the development of the clinical work-role competencies of nursing. There are pros and cons of both direct care and simulated clinical learning experiences in the formation of good clinical nursing practice. There is no shared understanding of the best evaluation of indicators of good nursing practice resulting from clinical education. Best practices for integration of direct care and simulated clinical learning experiences in nursing education programs and evidence on the outcomes, and indicators of good nursing practice, of those experiences are needed.

This task group will use the work of the Faculty Development and Resources Task Force and current evidence, and will seek new evidence to:

  1. Develop best practice recommendations for the integration of direct care and simulated clinical learning experiences to achieve the clinical work-role competencies.

Propose standard outcome indicators (qualitative and quantitative) of good nursing practice outcomes of clinical education.

STRATEGIC GOAL 2

Serve as a center for learning andragogies that promote learner capacity to increase the health and wellness of nursing’s recipients of care.

Initiative 2.3: Determine standard outcome assessment strategies and measures for multisite, replicable research.

Initiative 2.3 Task Group

Outcome Assessment Group

 Task Group Charge:

Background: There is no standard outcome measure for clinical competency/competencies developed during nursing education. There is a paucity of multi-site research using a common outcome measure. ICONEd has multiple members who represent a wide variety of academic programs and health systems with multiple hospitals and nursing practice sites that can be leveraged to support multi-site, replicable, outcomes research. This group will explore ICONEd membership and establish a plan for how multiple academic programs and multiple nursing practice sites can be used for multi-site research by:

  1. Creating a database of academic and practice partner data to support multi-site research.
  2. Gathering ICONEd members’ contact, institution, numbers of students/nurses, and other TBD information.
  3. Determining outcome assessment measures used by ICONEd members’ academic or practice sites.

STRATEGIC GOAL 2

Serve as a center for learning andragogies that promote learner capacity to increase the health and wellness of nursing’s recipients of care.

Initiative 2.4: Promote neuroscience-based andragogies for nursing practice formation.

Initiative 2.4 Task Group

Andragogies Group

Task Group Charge:

Background: The Faculty Development and Resources Task Force, part of the previous ICONEd strategic goals, has been working on learning and exploring existing neuroscience-based androgogies for the application in nursing education. This task group will use the work of the Faculty Development and Resources Task Force to:

  1. Explore neuroscience-based and other critical androgogies to support the learning, and thinking, needed for the provision of good clinical nursing practice.
  2. Establish best practices for learning androgogies in nursing education **this may overlap with the Clinical Education and Outcomes group**

Create a faculty development program and/or compile a set of existing tools to promote educator capacity for skillful teaching.

STRATEGIC GOAL 3

Establish a clearinghouse of learning outcomes research demonstrating the advancement of the science of nursing education and practice.

Initiative 3.1: Create a research strategic plan.

Initiative 3.2: Gather a robust network of research scientists to collaborate on the research strategic plan.

Initiative 3.3: Leverage big data to explore opportunities and identify outcomes.

Initiative 3.4: Leverage ICONEd participants for multisite research and replication of studies.

Initiative 3.5: Conduct systematic reviews of key outcome studies.

Initiative 3.1 - 3.5 Task Group

Research Group (initiatives 3.1 and 3.2; evaluate inclusion of 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5)

Task Group Charge:

Background: There is minimal research on the outcomes of nursing education, specifically clinical learning outcomes that demonstrate capacity for good nursing practice. This task group will collaborate with ICONEd leadership and task groups in each Strategic Goal as needed to:

  1. Create a research strategic plan to support task group achievement of individual strategic initiatives and strategic goals.
  2. Identify the research skillsets of ICONEd members, and what additional research support may be needed to implement the research strategic plan.
  3. Determine how initiatives 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 should be incorporated into the work of this group and whether other task groups will need to be established.

Determine how 3.4 overlaps with Initiative 2.3 and work of the Outcome Assessment task group.

STRATEGIC GOAL 4

Foster an international perspective on outcomes of nursing education.

Initiative 4.1: Define the scope of ICONEd’s promotion of nursing practice across the globe.

Initiative 4.2: Identify strategy for threading international perspectives through ICONEd strategic initiatives.

Initiative 4.1, 4.2 Task Group

International Strategy Group

Task Group Charge:

Background: ICONEd recognizes that nursing practice occurs internationally, and that there are common challenges and needs in academia and practice across the globe. A clear understanding of how ICONEd can learn from and contribute to an international view of nursing education and practice is unknown. This task group will:

  1. Explore international nursing perspectives, challenges, standards, and other information as needed to determine how ICONEd’s work can be informed by and enhance nursing practice across the globe.

Provide recommendations for ICONEd in general, and all task groups to ensure the relevant international perspectives, opinions, and contributions are elevated and integrated into all ICONEd actions.
